“Yei Be Chai is a major Religious Ceremony used for the Night Way because of the appearance of numerous Yeis (masked representations of supernatural beings which possess great powers) during the last two nights of the nine day ceremony. On the eighth day the Yei Be Chai conduct an initiation rite to introduce young Navajo boys and girls to the secret of the masked gods. The boys are blessed with sacred meal and then ceremonially whipped with yucca leaves by the masked figures. The girls are marked on the feet, hands, shoulders and head with corn meal and touched with white and yellow corn wrapped in spruce twigs.
