This bright and cheerful pair of brother-and-sister rag dolls, a folk art variation on RAGGEDY ANN and ANDY, speak to our nostalgia both for childhood and our common American past. There is Andy, with his sailor’s cap, bow tie and plaid shirt worn under sturdy denim overalls, all boy, his face freckled and his sailboat held lovingly in his lap. His sister Ann is also sprinkled with freckles , with a ribbon bow in her hair, her dolly close at hand, a lace collar and plaid dress (that matches Andy’s shirt) with a white overlay with four big buttons down the front and a ruffled hem. (She is also wearing white full-length bloomers with ruffles at the ankles.) These are decorative dolls—the clothes are sewn-on, as are Andy’s boat and Ann’s doll. They are nicely stuffed, and feel good to the touch with a firm resiliency. The traditional heart is not on the chest but is sewn on each doll’s right pockett; strips of red cloth substitute artfully for the usual yarn hair. Framed by this red rag
