DESCRIPTION/CONDITION ** Silver plated cross pendant depicting Saint Ulrich on horseback in 955 encouraging the soldiers in the battle of Augsburg. This cross was made in the 50s as part of the 1000 year jubilee of the battle of Augsburg. * Saint Ulrich was born around 890, and became the Bishop of Augsburg, Germany. He was the first saint actually canonized by a Pope, John XV, in 993. He was related to the dukes of Alamannia and the imperial family of the Ottos. * By fortifying Augsburg, Ulrich enabled that city to withstand a siege by the Magyars (Hungarians) until Otto arrived to defeat them at the Battle of Lechfeld (Aug. 10, 955), near Augsburg. This battle meant that Germany was never invaded again. Otto then granted Ulrich the unprecedented right to coin money. * He was canonized by Pope John XV in 993. * Overall the medal measures approximately 1-5/8" W and can be added to a chain or other piece of jewelry to wear or carry. * Good Pre-Owned Vintage Condition: Tarnish and scratches from age and use, no physical damage to the medal, no repairs. * Please review all photos carefully as they are part of the description and can best describe the condition.
