This is a stunning 1930s' navy straw toque: A toque is small cap or bonnet having a narrow brim or no brim at all. Toques were popular from the 13th to the 16th century in Europe, especially France. The mode was revived in the 1930s.It is a one piece straw creation meant to sit on top of the head, slightly tilted to one side. The hat has a fabric covered elastic band attached to the inside, to keep the hat in a tilted position. There is a large pompom sitting at the top, which is made some sort of matching color raffia. Stunning!Tilt hats were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. They were worn at an angle and held to the back of the head by a strap, rigid ring, elastic band beneath the hair, or a combination of these. No designer label is present, indicating it must have been a custom creation. There is a consumer's labor protection label with size 23, but this. hat would fit any size, since it sits on top of the head.This hat is in wonderful vintage condition & has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years.
