FASCINATING 1930's BLACK STRAW TILT TOQUE WITH FRUIT & LEAF TRIM + SHORT VEIL

This is an amazing small asymmetrical tilt black straw toque: A toque is small cap or bonnet having a narrow brim or no brim at all. Toques were popular from the 13th to the 16th century in Europe, especially France. The mode was revived in the 1930s. This toque consists of a fabric lined asymmetrical cap extending upwards in an asymmetrical point at front, plus a fold towards the back. Along the pointy top there are multiple little fruits in yellow and red hues, which look like they would be sugar coated. There are also two green leaves, though only one is visible.This leaf seems to have been repaired, but it adds to the authenticity of the piece. The second leaf is at the bottom of the string of 'fruits' & inside the fold. The material is some sort of plastic, and the leaves seems like it could be fabric or had paper coated with hard lacquer. To finish the look there is a short veil on the bottom front of the toque. There is an elastic attached to the inside brim to hold the toque in a tilted position.Tilt hats were popular in the 1930s & 1940s. They were worn at an angle and held to the back of the head by a strap, rigid ring, elastic band beneath the hair, or a combination of these. There is no label, indicating it was a custom-made creation.This hat is in wonderful vintage condition & has been lovingly preserved among over 1300 vintage hats we have collected for 40+ years.
